A lovely place with a river view, comfortable rooms, and warm hospitality, all for a great price.

This small pousada sits right on the sand, in a great spot with an impeccable view of the river mouth and excellent restaurants nearby. The landscaping is lovely, and the shared spaces look just like the photos. Breakfast was delicious and made to order, with cake and coffee available any time of day. We stayed in suite 4, where you can look straight out to sea from the bed. It felt like a dream. The room was sweet, comfortable, and spotless, with good quality linens and towels. The bathroom was very basic for a pousada at this price, with an electric shower and none of the usual amenities. There was no TV, which I didn’t miss, but it did strike me as unusual. A small pool would be welcome too, though I understand that isn’t what they’re going for. We visited in the low season, when the pousada had no chef and the restaurant was closed. Nearby restaurants more than made up for that. What really made our stay was the staff. Maria, Wendel, and Carol anticipated what we needed, booked restaurants, boats, and “taxis,” and shared useful advice about the town and ways to enjoy the area. They clearly cared about our well-being. They’re outstanding people. The facilities don’t justify the price we paid, but the staff’s high standard does.

The view is lovely, the location is convenient, and the service from Daiane, Leo, Santiago, Luciana, Gilram, and the rest of the team is what made us appreciate the place. Everyone was attentive and very helpful. The pousada is near the village’s Main Street, as locals call it, and bars and restaurants are close by. Some will even pick you up and drop you off for free. Mangue was excellent value for us, and tour agencies pick you up and bring you back, which makes things easier. The rooms were good, but not enough to justify a dollar-based resort price for a small, rustic pousada with limited facilities and only breakfast included. There’s no pool or other special feature, just hammocks and a deck overlooking the Brasília peninsula. It’s a pleasant spot, especially at the end of the day. There’s no TV either, so keep that in mind if you like watching it. We took a speedboat from Barreirinhas to Atins on an interesting route through Vassouras, Mandacaru, and Caburé. Arriving by water was great. The views were lovely, and it made more sense than traveling over the very bumpy roads. One frustrating thing at arrival was seeing other pousadas meet their guests, while Santa Maria didn’t offer that service. We had to book a transfer, then realized the pousada is only 100 meters from the Portinho arrival point by water. If you come by speedboat, ask the boatman to drop you a little farther along, at the access next to the pousada. Nobody explained this to us, not even the pousada, which could have offered a transfer like most nearby pousadas do. Thanks especially to Dayane, Leo, Santiago, Luciana, and Gilram for their kindness.
