Hotel Sorrento

It was average.

The parking was private and cost $20.00 so I wouldn’t have to leave my car on the street, but I had to collect it by 08h. It was the service the hotel offered its guests. I only needed a place for one night in BH, then decided to stay an extra day. By late afternoon I started looking around, but there were lots of events that weekend and every hotel and inn seemed full. I was about to head to Contagem or Betim when, passing through the center at night, I spotted another hotel and called the number. The receptionist said there was just one room left, so with no other options I stayed there. It was a horrible experience. The walls were dirty and looked moldy, and there was dust everywhere. A window near the bathroom ceiling opened onto the neighboring guest’s room, so I could hear them flushing, coughing and bumping into things. It was pretty disgusting. When I opened the minibar, a bad smell came out, and I didn’t feel comfortable putting my water in it. The shower was either extremely cold or so hot it would have scalded me, so I had to take a cold shower. I felt gross using the towels and bedding, and even hanging up my own towel. I couldn’t bring myself to have breakfast either.

The location is handy for Mercado central and Mercado Novo, but the hotel sits at a busy roundabout and gets a lot of noise. The room needs renovating. In room 103, the toilet was leaking, the shower enclosure was broken, tiles were missing, and the outlet wasn’t protected. Breakfast could use healthier options. Scrambled eggs mixed with very greasy mortadella isn’t something I’d recommend. The parking rules weren’t clear either. We arrived at 16h30 and left at 11am the next morning; it cost R$93, with only R$13 taken off by the hotel. It really fell short, and I can’t recommend it in its current state.

Rest is hard to come by here. There’s a bar next door making noise late into the night, and you can hear everything from the room. Then, once the bar finally quiets down, hotel staff start talking and laughing loudly and playing things on their phones at full volume. Unless you’ve gone about three days without sleep, this place feels like money thrown away. You can’t get any rest.
