You can walk straight from your room to the pool and then onto the beach, which is what makes Casa Amarela’s setting so special. The suites look out over the beach, while the standard rooms are farther back. The main pool is 27m long and a real treat for lap swimming. It isn’t heated, but there’s a second heated pool right beside it. This is a pousada, so it’s not fancy, but it must be one of the best spots on the island. Most pousadas are across the road from the beach, while this one sits right on it. There are plenty of nice beachside restaurants for watching the sunsets, and what sunsets they are. The staff are friendly and helpful too. It really feels like paradise.

The breakfast was horrible, and there’s no food nearby unless you’re willing to walk a long way. I was also told to turn my music down at 7 p.m., and the woman next door took my hammock. Not good.
