Hotel Tannenhof

The views from up there were great, and I liked the old German-inspired building and its antique feel. The elevators always seemed to be waiting on my floor, though that may just have been luck. I'm used to waiting ages for one in hotels like this. Breakfast looked lovely but was disappointing by European standards. There was plenty to choose from, so I tried a bit of everything, but the ingredients weren't great. The waffle barely resembled a waffle, and the cheese didn't really taste like cheese. Still, breakfast was included, so that didn't take away a star for me. It wasn't perfect, but the price wasn't high either, so I felt the five stars were deserved.

The decor, curtains, and furniture all feel very old fashioned. On the plus side, the staff are excellent, the maid service is great, and many employees speak Portuguese, German, and English. The central downtown location works well, though parking is limited. We'd stay here again.

I checked in, but didn't stay even one night because there wasn't even hot water. The hotel urgently needs refurbishment, and it seems the administration doesn't care. I wasn't the only guest complaining.

The beds could be more comfortable, but the other things were very satisfying: the facilities, location, food, and staff attention. The price was fair too.
