Hotel Intercity Manaus

We arrived around 12:30 a.m. after a three-hour flight from Texas and another five and a half hours from Miami. Check-in for my wife and me took 25 minutes, and our son still hadn't been checked in. I've been coming to Manaus to fish for 12-15 trips over the last 20 years, and this was a frustrating start. I can't tell whether the front desk was incompetent, the hotel software was bad, or both. The rooftop view is beautiful, the pool is lovely, and breakfast was good, especially the three-egg omelette. The room itself was decent, with a firm king bed, but it smelled like someone had smoked in it. After that long journey, falling asleep to cigarette odor wasn't welcome. The desk service was poor, and a room that's been smoked in needs proper cleaning, including repainting the walls and changing the curtains. That feels like weak management. The bedding is another problem. Brazilian hotels tend to give you a thin cover, and this one was no exception. It's not enough if you like sleeping at the recommended 19-20 C, or 66-67 F. The elevators are tiny. I hope you're not claustrophobic when four to six people squeeze into them. There were only two small water glasses in the room, perhaps six ounces each. They were glass, but I'd gladly have used a 12-16 ounce plastic cup. The gym was probably the worst hotel gym I've seen in a long time, even allowing for how skimpy gyms can be in three-star hotels. The adjustable weight bench was broken, the free weights were in bad shape, two treadmills didn't work, and the elliptical's lights and programs weren't working either. The Samsung TV remote had nearly dead batteries, too. I saw no air conditioning in the weight room, which is on the top floor where the hot air rises, in the Amazon near the equator. There was lots of neglect here as well. We have one more night, so I may post another review before we leave, either more positive or even more negative.
