Mata Atlântica Park Hotel

We had a lovely stay surrounded by the Mata Atlantica, a beautiful area that deserves to be enjoyed and protected. The grounds are gorgeous, and the outdoor pool was especially nice. The buildings are older but adequate, and the breakfast buffet was decent, with supper options available too. There was a hot tub and an indoor pool, but in summer they didn’t seem set up to encourage guests to use them. Bring plenty of mosquito repellent. The insects made the horseback ride pretty challenging, and the ride itself was just a quick loop around the lake, so don’t expect a full cowboy experience.

The food was our biggest surprise. It was delicious and served in generous portions, especially the well-seasoned fish. On weekdays when fewer guests were around, we could order from an à la carte menu instead, and those meals were just as good. I still preferred the buffet for its variety. The views and the forest are breathtaking. The trails and waterfalls were wonderful, and Matinhos is only about 20 minutes away, an easy drive for a day or afternoon at the beach. The general team were attentive and helpful. Housekeeping was fine: when we asked, the room was left clean and smelling fresh. We also had a minibar in the room. There’s lots for kids to see and do: feeding the very gentle lake fish from a bottle, visiting the rabbits and peacock, and seeing a little donkey on the property. There’s a treehouse, a new playground, and the insects were an attraction in their own right for the children. The recreation staff were wonderful on weekends. Since we stayed for a whole week, we wished they’d been available every day during the season, not just weekends. A couple of activities listed on the menu were no longer offered: sport fishing and carriage rides. The rooms also need more electrical outlets, especially ones that fit the newer plug type, since we couldn’t plug in our laptop. A small drying rack on the balconies would be useful too, especially with all that lovely sun. The hotel’s facilities could use some work. The outdoor hot tubs weren’t clean enough, and our swimwear came back stained with something that looked like greasy paint and wouldn’t wash out. We never saw anyone cleaning the rims, which often looked dirty and greasy. Bring lots and lots of insect repellent!
