Hotel Van Monet

The location was a great fit for our stop, right in the center and across from an old city monument. It gave the place a feeling of stepping back in time. We were pleasantly surprised by the hotel. The rooms and bathroom were extremely clean, and the hallways smelled fresh. It’s a simple, comfortable place. Breakfast is basic but does the job. A good choice for our stay.

The breakfast was a real letdown for the price. The only staff member handling the food and serving was kind and friendly, and she worked quickly, but there were 10 to 15 people eating and just one person trying to keep everything going. She was clearly overloaded, and that affected the quality. There was very little choice, and what was available was running low or nearly gone. I managed to get the last bit of egg, a tiny piece of cake, and coffee, just so I wouldn’t leave hungry. Judging by the other guests’ faces, I don’t think we were alone in feeling this way. I imagine many people stay because they’ve been on the road for a long time and simply need somewhere to sleep, as we did. We were driving and needed a place to spend the night near Miracatu. If I’d known this was the city’s “best” hotel, I would have driven farther. For a couple, the room cost R$310, plus R$30 for our little puppy we’d bought on the trip. The building’s interior is very old and run down, nothing like the photos and facade suggest. There was no real comfort for a pet despite the extra charge. The room was basic and had no curtains. The bathroom looked awful, with the wallpaper on the shower tiles peeling away. There’s no face towel, though if you ask at reception they’ll give you another bath towel instead. The faucet leaked, and the cleaning could have been better. At R$310, I expected a lot more. It absolutely isn’t worth the price.

The staff were all friendly and attentive, but the place felt like a family gathering. When I was there, it seemed like half the city came for breakfast because they were related to people in the kitchen and at reception. I was traveling home to SC with my mother and teenage nephew, and had to stop to sleep and rest. It cost R$255, which is far too much for a place like this. The room was awful and everything was old. The flush button was inside the shower stall, and the shower itself was another story. There was a cigarette smell, no parking, and we had to leave the car on the street. I’m never coming back.

The staff were the only good thing about this place. It was noisy, with people showing no basic respect for those trying to sleep. I was traveling with my daughter and grandson and needed to rest before continuing, but the stay was the worst hotel experience I’ve had in years of traveling. It cost R$255, which is outrageous for what you get. The owners should take a hard look at the situation and improve it. This dump needs urgent renovation or should just close. I never want to go near it again and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. The beds were filthy and made a horrible noise whenever you moved. There was a cigarette stench, and everything felt badly done. The flush was inside the shower stall, there was nowhere to get even a drink of water, and the breakfast was disappointing. The price suggests a five-star place, but this doesn’t deserve any stars.
