They confirmed my booking months ahead, so I bought a flight for those dates. Weeks later, they cancelled, citing “technical issues beyond their ability to resolve.” By then, prices for their own hostels and other places in Rio had doubled, and I couldn’t find an alternative dorm for less than €100 a night. I contacted Che Lagarto politely, though I was upset, but they wouldn’t help in any way. They basically told me tough luck, then ignored and blocked me. I’d avoid doing any business with a chain like Che Lagarto.

The location was a real highlight, close to the historic part of the city and lots of shops and restaurants. I stayed four nights and had a great time, with friendly, helpful staff. The room was mostly clean, though near the end I noticed lots of ants along one wall, from ceiling to floor. Still, I had a great experience.

There weren’t many people around, so the hostel felt a little short on atmosphere. We may just have had bad timing. Our private room was clean and very spacious, and the staff were friendly and answered our questions. The shower was mounted a bit awkwardly, but it wasn’t a dealbreaker. A solid place where everything works, though there’s nothing extra.

I usually don’t leave reviews, but the staff here were so nice I had to say something. They all spoke English and went way out of their way for me and my brother. The room was really spacious, and the water and shower pressure were perfect. I’ve never stayed in such a pleasant hostel. Wish every hotel and hostel were like this. Perfect!
