Imperatriz Paraty Hotel

We stayed just one night, then moved elsewhere for the remaining two nights of our Paraty holiday. The quadruple room we were offered was dark, on the ground floor, and had no view, just a window facing a concrete wall. It was in poor shape, with very basic furniture, worn towels, thin pillows, and a TV with bad reception.

There were some serious details that made us unlikely to stay again. The floor around the pool has sunk in places, leaving puddles, especially by the loungers. My wife’s cocktail wasn’t good, and when we complained, we were told an opened bottle of prosecco is kept for three days before it’s thrown out. I guess ours was from day three. Our first room looked like it was mid-refurbishment: there was no clothes rail or hair dryer, the desk had no chair, and some outlets didn’t work. There was a cockroach in there. They moved us without trouble, but the next room had the same issues and a frog hopping around too. The photos make the hotel look good, and it could be a great place with better management and more attention to the renovation details.

The pool is lovely, breakfast is pretty good, and I liked being a little outside town. The juice was very watered down, though. Our room was huge and clean, with a fairly comfortable bed, and the staff were really nice and patient with us since we don't speak Portuguese. Bugs got in through gaps around the doors, so we blocked the bottom of one with something. The pool table dips in the middle, so the balls roll there, while the warped ping pong table and wobbly football table are barely usable. Most of the poolside chairs are broken in some way too. At this price in town, I thought they could fix these things. I've rounded up to 4 stars.

The breakfast was good, served as a buffet like we call it back home. The rooms were spacious, comfortable, clean, and air-conditioned, and the bathrooms were just as good. There are mosquitoes around, so be ready for them. You may not be able to leave the windows open at night.
