Mercure Rio Boutique Hotel Copacabana

The restaurant is a good start to the day, and breakfast is included in the package I usually book. I’ve stayed twice, in November 2025 and May 2026, and would come back. The hotel is nice, though the rooms are a bit small and the balcony rooms have an okay beach view. There’s plenty to walk to around Copacabana Beach. The area gets a little loud, but nights are generally not bad.

The worst part was the bathroom: black mold, a toilet that kept leaking and smelled of pee, and a flush that didn’t work properly. The mold and leaking made the whole place smell awful. The rooms were small, noisy, and hygiene and cleaning were poor. There was no coffee machine or tea in the room, though those were minor concerns next to the bigger problems. I’ll add photos to show how bad it was. The only good part was finally leaving. Avoid this hotel at all costs.

We loved the location, the modern feel, the amazing breakfast, and having reception and security available around the clock during our five nights in Rio. The room itself was far too cramped. The bed nearly touched both opposite walls, and it often stopped the door from opening all the way. There was so little room to move or unpack that we had to lift our luggage over the bed. The bathroom was acceptable, if a bit dated. A smaller bed or turning it 90 degrees could leave room for the door and make it easier to get around.

After spending $2,500 for four nights, I found the service and breakfast well below par. Items that ran out weren’t replenished, and I had to clear the previous guests’ table myself. The espresso machine in the room had no replacement capsules, so we had to buy them at the restaurant. Reception was poor too, and I felt as if my presence was a nuisance. As someone who regularly stays with this hotel chain, I didn’t expect such a low standard.
