Hotel Mato Grosso

The room had a TV, air conditioning, and a minibar that worked well. The place felt cozy and was clean, and the service was very good. It's well located and the price was good. I only stayed for a day, so it worked out really well for me.

I was in the area this week and had some doubts after reading the other reviews, but decided to try the hotel anyway. I was pleasantly surprised. They told me it was under new management, and I really liked the place. Everything was well organized, the staff were lovely, and the breakfast was delicious.

A bakery and other shops are very close by, and the hotel itself is well located. The service was very good, and both the rooms and bathroom were very clean.

I can't recommend this hotel. It was my worst hotel experience. At the entrance there was a strong smell of cat feces, and the staff always looked annoyed. It was obvious they seemed bothered by having guests around. They wouldn't greet or speak to you, and were in a bad mood all the time. The rooms and corridors were dirty. They cleaned daily, but there was still a sour smell, something like fish. In a conversation with people nearby, I found out the building had previously been a medical clinic and hadn't been designed as a hotel. Breakfast was awful. The food seemed to be reused from the day before. The savory snacks were soaked in oil and often burnt, and the cheese and ham were past their best. Everything was left out with no warming tray or refrigeration, and flies were landing on the food. The tables were dirty, the space was tiny, and the smell reached the area where we ate. The kitchen staff were unpleasant too. They gave you dirty looks, ignored requests, and wouldn't do anything you asked. I was there for work, with overnight shifts, so I needed to sleep during the day. That was difficult because the housekeepers made noise in the corridors, talking loudly and playing music while cleaning other rooms. They also brought their children to the hotel. There was laughter from staff, kids, loud music, and I was just trying to sleep. Sometimes, when I did manage to fall asleep, they'd knock and ask, "Housekeeping, do you need your room cleaned?" Those were miserable days. To top it off, we went two days without water, and I had to buy bottled water for personal hygiene. If you're in Santarém, stay well away from this hotel.
