You're right near nature, and the location is wonderful. A great place with a perfect host and staff.

I paid for a night but had to lose the money because the place was in no condition to host anyone. The inn is bankrupt and abandoned, at its worst.

The inn has a lot going for it: it's charming and pleasant, with clean, spacious rooms and an incredible breakfast featuring local food, served on a lovely, leafy wooden deck. The staff were friendly and polite, always ready to help and chat. The chalet bathrooms were far below what the price suggests. They're basic, with low-quality plumbing and electric showers. It isn't the end of the world, but the bathroom standard doesn't match the cost. We were also upset by the very expensive tours the team at pousada alter suggested and persuaded us to take. They weren't what we wanted at all. The trips felt like a "CVC" package, with crowded small boats and a set time for everything. The guide chose which restaurant we ate at and which shop we visited, which felt terribly stuffy and always seemed aimed at taking advantage of tourists. After the whole ordeal, we were told hotels earn money by referring tourists to these tour guides. So the tour had been presented as amazing, but it seemed the real point was earning a referral commission. We know this happens all over the country, but it made us wary of asking the inn for recommendations. We came away feeling that people at the inn and at various tourist services in Alter just wanted to get money out of us, manipulating and deceiving us the whole time. The inn can be worth a stay, but be careful with "tips" that sound like favors and may just be ways to take advantage of tourists.

The deck was one of my favorite parts, and the inn has a lovely feel with plenty of connection to nature. The rooms and bathrooms could be made more comfortable and secure while keeping their rustic character, especially since the bathroom and bedroom doors don’t lock. Having someone at reception around the clock would help guests and prevent strangers from coming in. Also, Caranazal restaurant next door sometimes has weekend parties, so it may not suit anyone looking for peace and quiet on event days.
