Hotel New Plaza

For a romantic getaway, this seems like the place to choose.

The rooms were clean, and there were great blankets available, which mattered because it was cold while we were there. The service was excellent. The only things we missed were more breakfast options, and clearer signs for the parking, which was hard to find.

Before booking, think about whether the lowest price is your only option, or if you can spend a little more. We paid 120 reais, and I wasn't expecting a fancy hotel, but at least the room should have been properly cleaned. I hope I didn't come away with a fungus or scabies. The room smelled strongly of cigarettes. The ceiling had mold, and there were stains that looked like mold on the pillows, which had no waterproof protectors. Two blankets in the closet smelled used and weren't in protective bags. There were hairs from previous guests around the room. The sink corner was dirty, there was black gunk in the grout above it, and water drained slowly from the tap. Something that looked like food was caught in the drain. The shower didn't get properly hot, which made for an unpleasant shower in the chilly weather. Breakfast had no fruit at all, just bread and toast, cake, cheese, ham, juice that tasted like pure sugar, coffee with milk, a few sweet biscuits, margarine, and little packets of jam. Basically sugar and carbs. I really liked the woman on the night shift who arrives at 10 p.m. We stayed two nights and she was there both days, which made me wonder if she was being overworked, since night shifts shouldn't be every day. There was an air conditioner in the room, but we couldn't find the remote, so I don't know if it worked. The two EVA slippers provided looked dirty. The outlet beside the double bed didn't work. The bedsheet wasn't fitted and came loose overnight, leaving us directly on the mattress.

The bedding was very old and moth eaten, and the shower enclosures were broken. There was an air conditioner in the room, but they only told us about the extra charge to use it around two hours after check-in. They called in the middle of the night and woke us up to explain. When the hotel is full, it doesn't have enough space for everyone at breakfast. We waited about half an hour for a seat, and there were only four tables for all the guests. Since we didn't know the area, we ended up in a room facing a noisy street with lots of trucks passing, which really disrupted our sleep. There was also a strong cigarette smell at times. For 115 reais, a motel overnight stay would have been more comfortable and better value.
