Carlton Express - Antigo Plaza Hotel

I only chose this place because the other hotels cost so much more. Several staff members were indifferent and unprofessional, making it feel like we were doing them a favor by asking for help. I won’t be back.

Breakfast was very good and served at the nearby Carlton Plaza, which belongs to the same chain and has a higher standard. Our room was spacious, well equipped, and had a TV with lots of channels and a minibar. The bed was comfortable, and the bed and bath linens were clean. The bathroom was a little cramped, though the shower had strong pressure and a mixer. Parking was available free along the curb or in a covered lot for $15.00. In Jan/26, a double room and a triple room cost $390.

We stayed here because the price was attractive. It’s a basic hotel with a decent but simple breakfast, and it could use more upkeep. The curtains had black patches, some outlets were loose, the TV channels were very fuzzy, the old iron window was hard to open, and the minibar was badly rusted. There are only a few parking spaces out front, so I left the car on the street.

The four days here were awful for me and my friends. There’s no elevator, so I feel for anyone put in an upstairs room. Our rooms looked tidy at first, but they were filthy. The bathroom was tiny and disgusting, with mold and slime; the towels smelled like sweaty feet, the sink was clogged, and its marble left stains on my hand. There was no proper bedding, just sheets and blankets. My friends even found stained blankets, and we couldn’t tell what the stains were, though they could have been blood, semen, or something else. The minibar was dirty, with pubic hair inside, and there was hair in the sink too. Asking for a deeper clean didn’t help. That morning, when we requested it, we came back to find a towel used to stub out a cigarette carelessly dumped on our clothes. Breakfast wasn’t good either. The bread seemed stale and was hard. The place felt more like a motel: the couple next door kept having loud sex while the whole corridor was quiet. Nobody asked them to keep it down. I think if my friends and I had been playing truco, someone would have told us off. I considered asking the receptionist to speak to them, but he was talking loudly on his phone after midnight. Whenever we asked for anything, he treated us in a passive-aggressive way, like he was picking a fight. If you want a clean room and qualified staff, this hotel isn’t for you. I’d never recommend it, even to my worst enemy. If zero stars were possible, that’s what I’d give. I hope it closes and never opens again.
