The room was private and had its own bathroom. The bed was comfortable, the sheets looked somewhat clean, and the water was warm with decent pressure. But the kitchen was one of the worst hostel kitchens I’ve dealt with. The pots looked like they were from the 90s and had handles coming loose. The stove seemed from the 80s, and one burner was burned out and didn’t work. The owners had a separate kitchen of their own in the back, which made me wonder how anyone could cook here every day. The property felt very secure, with barbed wire around every property nearby. Maybe that’s because I wouldn’t want to go out after dark in sao Luis. By now you’ve probably figured out that most Google reviews in Brazil are fake and wildly inflated. If you’re in sao Luis on your way to the sand dunes, I’d skip the city and head straight there. Do yourself a favor and book a transfer from the airport to barreirhas instead of staying in sao Luis.

New Friends has a really nice place and a very calm atmosphere. I had a great time there. Lots of people are heading to barreirihna, so it’s a good spot to meet others and make the trip together.

The hosts were so kind, and everyone made my daughter, husband, and me feel at home. The place was clean, peaceful, airy, and really welcoming. I got to have coffee while Jr’s mother-in-law, who was making the cake for the next day, and I had a lovely exchange of experiences. I enjoyed the company so much that going out seemed unnecessary. There are hammocks and a wonderful pool, plus all the basics guests need: a fridge, cupboards, stove, coffee maker, and utensils. The house itself is comfortable, well laid out, and has space for all kinds of travelers. The neighborhood is well located, seems safe and attractive, which is rare in this forgotten capital. There’s a shopping mall nearby if something comes up, and the litorânea is only a few minutes away on foot.

It’s a welcoming, sociable place for both guests and volunteers, with a well planned, comfortable house and a great setup for all kinds of travelers. You can rent bikes at a really affordable price, and the beach is close enough to reach on foot or by bike.
