Ô De Casa

I had a frightening confrontation with the receptionist at O de Casa late one night. I came in quietly with a few friends, all sober, and he immediately told us to stop talking, then to shut up. Later, while my friend and I were quietly filling our water bottles and talking, he raised his voice at us again. I said we weren't doing anything wrong and that paying hostel guests should be allowed to talk as long as they're not disturbing anyone. He followed me down the hall, yelling, then stood inches from my face and ordered me to leave right away. It felt like he was trying to provoke me into touching him so we would fight. I wanted no part of that, told him to calm down, and tried to de-escalate while expecting he might punch me. After a minute or two, I went to my room, but he followed me and my friend in and kept trying to throw me out. I said that was ridiculous and I wasn't leaving. He eventually seemed to realize he'd gone too far and left us alone. Their cameras should have captured it. The next day I told the front desk, and the manager reached out saying she wanted to hear what happened. We arranged a time to call, but she never got back to me. The same receptionist was working the following night. It's extremely unprofessional for staff to handle a problem by threatening guests, and trying to put someone out on the streets of São Paulo in the middle of the night is dangerous. Until these issues with staff and policy are dealt with, I think guests could be at risk. I recommend avoiding this hostel.
