We paid 50 USD, or 100 Belize dollars, for one night, and it didn’t feel worth it. The AC wasn’t working properly, the toilet wouldn’t flush number #2 down right, and there were cockroaches in the room. Since we were only staying the night, switching rooms didn’t make sense. They also declined our request for a partial refund.

The rooms were decent and the location was great during my 10 days at the Mirador Hotel in Corozal. What put me off was how the last day was handled. I’d told the manager/owner in advance that my flight was at 5:00 PM and asked to leave my bags there. She said that was fine, as long as I brought them down before the 1:00 PM late checkout cutoff. Back-to-back meetings kept me away until about 2:45 PM, just under two hours after the cutoff. Even after more than 10 nights there, she insisted on charging me for another full night. To me, that felt like rigid, nickel-and-dime customer service with no regard for the context or a long-term guest. I probably wouldn’t stay again. There are plenty of other local places that value loyal guests and know that a little flexibility goes a long way.

The people here were wonderful, and the owners should pay whatever it takes to keep those gems. The building itself needs an infusion of cash, though. The doors were all sticky and hard to open, and the electric gate was broken, so it took all your strength to push it open and shut. In the room, there was a 12 inch step up from the main floor to the bathroom. The toilet seat kept falling with a loud bang instead of staying up. We wouldn’t stay again.

The private off road parking was secure, and the tiny towels were at least soft and clean. But the room felt like the bottom of the barrel, and next time I’d rather spend more. The linen was dirty, the pillows were horribly lumpy, and the old bed squeaked. Paint was peeling all over, there was no fridge, and the ugly curtains let the light in. The bathroom was small and poky. The fan didn’t work. When I told reception, she just pointed to another one and told me to take it. I’d normally expect staff to sort that out instead of making me struggle up the steps with a large fan, though I was grateful to have it.

I cancelled after the first night because the bed was so awful that I wondered if the tile floor might be more comfortable. We’d paid for three nights and weren’t refunded. Instead, they gave us a voucher for two nights, which we then learned expired after three months. I was told the mattresses were all new just six months earlier, and she said they were bought new in March, but never said which year.
