Travelodge by Wyndham Abbotsford Bakerview

The bed was great, and the clean towels and sheets and quiet room made this good value otherwise. But the microwave smelled overpoweringly bad, the bathroom was dated with some kind of unsettling renovation, and the safety lever lock on the door was broken. They also charged too much on my credit card and haven’t refunded the difference. Hopefully they catch that mistake very soon.

I wanted to try the place for one night and then leave, but they wouldn’t refund me. I booked rooms for a team because I trusted the chain, and this was the worst hotel or motel I’ve ever stayed in. There’s a homeless encampment across the street, and guests smoke all over the property. The room smelled awful, like they’d sprayed something to cover it up. The floor had taped and untaped sections that could trip you, the beds were small and uncomfortable, and the AC didn’t work and was very loud. I asked the front desk to clean its filter and put a bug screen on the window, but the screen didn’t fit. One of the housekeeping ladies wiped the AC and the cloth was black. There were dust bunnies under the bed, the fridge door wouldn’t close right and froze my vegetables, the bathroom fan didn’t work, the doors wouldn’t close properly, and the dressers were disgusting. I’d give zero if I could. DO NOT STAY here.

The location beside the main road made the room noisy, and the surroundings were unsettling. The hotel seemed to be used as social housing; many tenants smoked, people who appeared to be using drugs were in the parking lot, and others wandered around. The tent city across the road seemed to be spreading into the lot. I’ve stayed at many hotels in this chain, but this was the worst and has me thinking twice about using it again. The building is old and run down. They’ve put some money into the reception area, but that doesn’t carry through to the rest of the property. Management seems to have tried to update rooms on a limited budget, with some new vanity tops and shower inserts, and new flooring in some rooms. The updates look cheap, though, and other parts are dated. In my room, one window was blacked out, which made it feel like a coffin. The AC barely worked, the lighting was poor, the furniture was worn, and the carpet had seen better days. There were dirty handprints on the walls, and the old mattress was uncomfortable with lumpy pillows. I was offered another room, but its AC worked even less effectively, and the only apparent improvement was new, cheap flooring.

The area felt like a war zone, with partying, drug use, and drinking day and night. The rooms were dingy and needed repairs, with broken floor tiles, no in-room amenities, and blank spots on the walls where art had been. The furniture looked out of place. At least the bed was clean and comfortable. Don’t stay here. It feels unsafe.
