Schooner Motel

The room was poorly maintained, and negative signs around the establishment included one saying stolen items would be charged at five times their value. We had a horrible experience with customer service and will never return. Checkout was at 10:30am. I was working from the hotel, and when we checked in, we’d asked for a late checkout. The front desk woman said we could stay until 10:45am. At 10:30, someone banged loudly on the door with his fist. An angry male staff member yelled that it was checkout time. I told him about the extension, but he called someone, presumably the woman from the front desk the night before, to check because he didn’t believe me. Then he left angrily. I was packed and ready to go at 10:45. The same man and another male staff member banged loudly and yelled at me to get out. They tried to intimidate me, but it didn’t work. I told them I was leaving, and they stood in the doorway with crossed arms and angry faces while I left. I dropped off the key at the desk, where nobody was present.

The location is fantastic, and for a budget motel this place is actually not too bad despite all the awful reviews. It was clean, and the bed was comfortable. There was a sticker saying the oven didn’t work, and when we asked for a kettle, they seemed flustered. Still, it was okay overall. It was all we could afford when the alternative cost three times as much. I guess Tofino is just really expensive, so I’m not sure it’s great value. The warning stickers about fines did make us laugh.

The only good thing was the location. The place was old and poor, the owners barely spoke English, and there was no AC or heat. They overcharged me $167 without explaining what it was for. The main-floor view wasn’t great, and weeds covered the window in my daughter’s room. They should cut them back. I wonder how they’re allowed to run this business.

The motel is centrally located, but the room was dated, unclean, and musty. When I checked the mattress and bed, I found several bugs crawling under the sheets. We cancelled our booking and told reception what we’d found. If you stay here, inspect the bed before turning in.
