MacKechnie House

We had a spacious, clean bedroom with a lovely garden view, and the bathroom was clean too. There was a small kitchen area with a mini fridge for drinks, and the Wi-Fi worked well enough for us to work on our computers in the living room. The breakfast was delicious, and Cathryn was always friendly and helpful. MacKechnie House is a beautiful 18th-century home in a quiet area, about three minutes by car from historic downtown Cobourg or a 10 to 15 minute walk. Breakfast was wonderful, and special dinners can be arranged ahead of time since owner Cathryn is a professional caterer. The restored Greek Revival house is close to downtown Cobourg, with antique furniture in every room, high ceilings, a spacious central staircase, and grand bedrooms. A lovely choice for a romantic weekend away.

We stayed at MacKechnie House in 2013 and are looking forward to returning when we get the chance. The hospitality was friendly, the breakfast was wonderful, and it was good value for the money. Set on three-quarters of an acre, this is one of Cobourg’s oldest buildings, an 1840s Greek Revival house with three roomy, antique-filled bedrooms styled to suit the home’s 1880s theme. It’s only minutes from downtown and the waterfront, but has a private, comfortable, at-home feel instead of a hotel atmosphere. Rooms started at $115.00 a night, so there seemed to be options for most budgets. Of the three rooms we saw, we’d suggest the Gatsby room if privacy matters most. It also has a back porch that smokers can use.

The two cats are awesome. The rooms are warm and comfortable, clean, and well supplied, and the house has the historic feel of a century home. Excellent breakfast!
