Shallow Bay Motel & Cabins

The staff were friendly and helpful, the beds were comfortable, and our room was clean and impressively quiet even with bus tours staying there. We also had a lovely waterfront view, though it showed through just one window, and a small deck with a picnic table where we enjoyed soup from the grocery store up the road. The location was good, but the motel is spread out and involved a lot of walking, which wasn't great for my group. I thought I'd mentioned mobility issues when booking, but maybe I hadn't, so I'd suggest calling ahead and bringing it up again at check-in. When I said the walk was long, they told me about a closer secondary entrance. Our room was set up for two even though I'd booked for three, which was disappointing after a long drive, but they fixed it quickly once I mentioned it. I didn't try the restaurant since it cost more than we wanted to spend, and I felt the stay was too expensive for breakfast not to be included. I didn't love the place, but it wasn't a bad place to stay.

It feels like paying extra for a room of your own means you get the worst one. I think they do this at this hotel and others on the island. The towels seemed about 30 years old. At breakfast, the waitress brought me burnt toast. When I said it was burnt, she insisted it wasn't, which felt like gaslighting. That kind of laziness and hostility makes me wonder why they'd work in hospitality at all. They must hate their jobs. It feels like my money counts for less than other people's.

We were glad other travelers pointed us toward the restaurant, since Google only lists a motel here. After a very cold mid-May boat tour on Western Brook Pond, a warm meal nearby was a lifesaver, and this may be the closest one in the area. The food was nourishing and the traditional-style dining room was comfortable. We weren't staying at the motel and arrived during a quiet mid-afternoon, but they still took great care of us. The service was kind, too. Go in through the main hotel entrance, then the restaurant door is on the left, across from the desk.

We had to stop unexpectedly while on our way to see a very sick family member. Raymond, the gentleman working, was incredibly kind and went out of his way to help us.
