The Downtown, a Coast Hotel

The staff were so kind and easy to talk to, and the bathroom had lovely organic lotion, body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. I appreciated that the hotel is going green. The bed and pillows were wonderfully comfortable, too. I stayed two nights at The Downtown, a Coast Hotel, while traveling between Inuvik and Whitehorse. Its clean, cozy rooms have a charming old European feel, and the location near several great restaurants was a real plus. I had a wonderful visit and would recommend it.

The Sour Dough saloon is right downstairs, home of the Sour toe cocktail. I didn't speak with the staff, though they seemed friendly, and I'd stay here again. The room was clean, and the mobile AC unit was a great addition. I liked the refreshing historical atmosphere and that they kept the character intact. The shower swung from scalding hot to ice cold, though, which is why I gave it four stars.

I wouldn't stay here again. My room in the Annex wing was hot and stuffy, with no ventilation, and its only window looked into an internal courtyard. It was incredibly noisy late at night and early the next day. The window wouldn't lock, so my gear didn't feel secure. The room itself was fine, but housekeeping also skipped their daily service if even a tiny item was left on the bed.

There’s a bar on the ground floor, and the music is loud. Also, there’s no lift, so heavy bags would be a problem, though we usually travel without them. The room was newer and better than I expected.
