The bed was comfortable and the Westin Holtel is in a convenient location, but the rest of my stay was a letdown. My partner and I were there to present at the Getca (Edmonton Teachers' Conference) convention. In our room, the towels were very thin and worn, the alarm clock didn’t work, and the bathroom lighting was poor. There was only one of each coffee item and condiment. When we asked reception for more, they brought enough for one person, still not enough for morning coffee. The Getca presentation setup was especially frustrating. Our room was only half furnished with chairs, so staff had to bring them in while the presenter was speaking. They came a few at a time, interrupting the presentation about five times, and some attendees still had to stand. The presenter had only a microphone, no lavalier, despite moving around to show slides. The partition to an adjoining room was left partly open, and the interactive presentation there was loud enough that people in the middle and back of our room struggled to hear and were distracted. This should have been organized before the session. The hotel hosts Getca every year, and I expected a much better setup.

The central downtown location made it easy to get to meetings, and the bed was comfortable after work. But the Westin Edmonton fell well short of what I expect for business travel. The hotel feels dated, and I found visible mold in the shower. Staff seemed disengaged, and requests weren’t handled promptly. Food deliveries such as Uber Eats can’t be brought to guest rooms, so you have to go downstairs to collect them. Staff often said they were “too busy” to help, even when they appeared to be socializing in the lobby. That’s especially inconvenient if you’re working late, already settled in, or unwell. I wouldn’t recommend it to colleagues looking for a comfortable, service-oriented stay.

We’ve held our company Christmas parties at Westin for years. I stayed overnight last year, and the room was spacious but smelled a bit like plumbing. The view from my floor was better thanks to my Bonovy membership, but the room still didn’t feel premium for a Marriott property. The banquet meal was okay, better than Delta’s, though the event space felt cramped under its low ceilings. There was little privacy on the first floor, where strangers could easily wander through. Companies hosting events should account for attendance and take steps to keep the space private. The University of Alabama seems to love this venue, which I find ridiculous. I won’t attend their events anymore. Parking cost me 27$.

The room was clean and I enjoyed the stay. Staff were helpful, and check-in, the food, and the other service were excellent. My only trouble in the room was that some outlets, especially in the bathroom, wouldn’t work. I also wish there were underground parking reserved for hotel guests, or at least clear signs showing how many spaces were available.

My room was mostly clean and the hotel seemed decent, but the lobby scent made the stay painful for me. I’m extremely sensitive to fragrance and get very sick from it. Just checking in, waiting for the elevators, and walking through the lobby caused severe pain. I couldn’t try breakfast because the restaurant is in the same scented area. Thankfully, there was no scent in the room. I liked the hotel otherwise, but with a big downtown convention every year, I hope I’m not assigned here again.
