Acorn Motel

The location worked well for us, near the rec centre and just off the main road. We walked around and grabbed supper across the parking lot. During the death race, a welcome note and fruit basket were waiting in my room, and the staff were friendly, informative, and checked me in quickly. Taking over a room from someone who cancelled was easy. The hotel is older, with dated rooms, worn carpet, and a bathroom that could use an upgrade. Still, it was clean and well stocked, and the lower price made that pretty much expected.

I liked being able to walk to restaurants, the mall, and the grocery store. The kitchenette was useful too, with a mini fridge, microwave, and stovetop. Breakfast was decent, with bagels, toast, cereal, fruit, juice, milk, waffles, pancakes, and spreads, though peanut butter was the only protein option. Sleep was rough for me. The room was hot, the AC was really loud, the bed hurt my hips, and the pillows were lumpy. They did bring different pillows, which helped. The old TV worked if you were bored, but it was hard to tell what was on without a channel menu, the sound wasn't great, and I would have liked to connect my phone.

For work, this was a handy place to stay, especially with a kitchenette and a grocery store and other businesses just across the parking lot. I was there nine nights and somehow got a suite, which was a nice surprise. The basic continental breakfast had cereal, frozen pancakes and waffles, toast, juice, and coffee, and it was always stocked. A hot shower made the shower squeal at a high pitch, and my coworkers noticed it too. There was no bathroom fan, so I worried mold might already be there or could develop soon. I was also confused at first because the first floor is up a flight of stairs. There are stairs only and no elevator, so it isn't accessibility friendly. Even with those issues, I'd stay again for work.

It's clean and basic, with a kitchenette that has a mini fridge, sink, and hot plate. There's no elevator, so expect to haul bags up one or two storeys. Breakfast comes with the room, though we ate somewhere else. The choices were toast, cereal, toaster pancakes and waffles, and fruit; the coffee was weak. There are only six seats in the breakfast room, but most of the tradespeople seemed to take food to go. You can walk to nearly all of Grande Cache, including a grocery store one block away.
