Super 8 by Wyndham Guelph

The room was bright, very clean, and more than I expected for the price. I had a comfortable stay. Online booking made check-in quick, and although I arrived earlier than expected, they got me settled promptly and professionally. The woman at the front desk was especially helpful and great to deal with.

The room itself was clean and comfortable, though it got too warm overnight and I couldn’t adjust the heat. The bed felt a little too hard. We could’ve used extra soap, and my wife thought the light above the sink should be brighter. I also couldn’t get Netflix to work. Still, it wasn’t bad overall.

I was there alone on business, and this felt sketchy. I booked on Trivago and was quickly asked for a $200 deposit, which I put on my credit card. I had to ask three times before they gave me a receipt for the charge, and they seemed reluctant to provide one. At checkout I asked for a receipt showing the deposit was being returned. The front desk guy said he needed to inspect the room for damage first. I pointed out they already had my credit card and photo ID with my address, and that I hadn’t paid with a debit card. I ended up having to contact my credit card company. This wasn’t like the Super 8 I remembered from years ago, and I wouldn’t recommend it.

The booking agency was happy to refund us when we called, but the front desk scammer wouldn’t cooperate and acted as if he knew nothing about it, saying he was new to the company. When we arrived, his wife and kids were in the lobby and one child was screaming and crying. We got awful front desk service, no help with the refund, and a whole list of reasons they might keep the deposit. They also tried to ask for twice the deposit amount they’d originally quoted. I wouldn’t recommend this place. There’s a much nicer hotel next door with much nicer staff.
