The prices were another problem: compared with the supermarket across the street, items were marked up by 100-150%, and prices were listed without tax, if they were listed at all. Once, the amount on the TV differed from what I was charged at the register, so I was outright scamed. I wonder how many students were scamed without realizing it. The manager said he'd look into it and get back to me, but never did. At checkout I got a threatening list of fines for not cleaning various things. I was expected to wash the only thing supplied in the room, the sheets, at my own expense. Did I really pay 2000 CAD a month to clean mirrors and drawers, and pay a fee to take out the trash? The mandatory meal plan felt inhumane, trapping money there. In the dining hall, the options were basically breakfast or a burger, and nobody could explain where the prepaid funds could be used. Instead of forcing people to buy bad food, they could make food people want. When I arrived one evening, the receptionist insisted there'd been a mistake and I wasn't staying there. Eventually he found my booking and sent me to an empty room with no basic supplies. For the first few days I was basically camping: no pillow, blanket, towel, soap, or shower curtain. There was a hole in the carpet, the window barely opened, and the air conditioning either blasted right at my head or didn't work. In winter the building switched to heating and became unlivable. Management's advice was to open a window, but it opened only about 5 centimeters. I couldn't even bring a cup of tea into the building because of the absurd setup with several massive, heavy doors. I never understood why there were random days when guests simply weren't allowed in. Having to scan a card at every entrance, then getting shouted at by staff if I failed, made the stay much worse.

I booked a summer stay even though I'm not a student. The room was dingy but decent until I woke up with bedbugs in the sheets. I pulled them apart right away and found clear signs of previous bugs in the seams, plus a mattress tag that did little to reassure me. The student staff quickly and kindly moved us to another room. But supervisors aren't there on weekends to handle this properly, so I was told I'd have to contact them on their schedule to request a refund. I called during the stated hours and still couldn't get anyone to answer. Don't book unless you want unexpected company in bed, and not the fun kind.

Living at Mohawk College Residence for eight months was miserable. It feels like a prison, and I'd choose off-campus housing instead. The rooms are dirty, laundry costs too much, and they tried to charge me $400 for a mattress already covered in piss and shit when I moved in. When I pushed for a replacement, I waited ages because nobody was around to provide one, so I had to keep sleeping on it. The mandatory meal plan makes you put around 2k-3k on your OneCard. Any unused money disappears to the school, which feels like a scam. The food is awful, bland, and overpriced, worse than middle school cafeteria food. Cooking for yourself isn't easy either: there's no stove in the rooms, portable ones aren't allowed, and the shared kitchen is downstairs. Wi-Fi is extremely slow, unreliable, and constantly crashes. Hidden charges and poor maintenance add to the feeling that the residence is a scam. You'd be better off anywhere off campus.

I wouldn't recommend this place. They charge too much for such a small living space, claim to offer cable TV but don't, and the staff seem lazy and uncaring. The air quality is poor too.

I'm enjoying my summer here. The staff are wonderful, and I like being able to do laundry while I cook.
