We stayed at Maison de L'Anse-aux-Oies in both August and September, and each time we met interesting, charming guests and had another of Sylvie’s amazing breakfasts. The whole table spread looks like a work of art, from the local touches to the careful presentation. Sylvie’s eye for detail shows in everything, from the little artistic live plants around the rooms to the dusting she adds to the breakfast plates. You really have to stay here to understand what attention to detail means. Sylvie et René run a very comfortable, peaceful gite on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River [opposite Charlevois], where you can watch the tides come and go. It’s also a great base for heading to the Gaspe or south into New Brunswick. They’re warm, open hosts who work hard to make a visit relaxing and pleasant. We loved our time at this lovely gite. Thank you Sylvie et René.

We enjoyed the maritime museum right next door in the morning, including the huge retired Canadian navy hydrofoil displayed outside. It gave us a better sense of the area’s maritime history before we continued into Quebec City. The quiet back room, looking over the yard and river, was just right, and there was a shared kitchen for making food or coffee. Breakfast brought local produce and products, plus great bilingual conversation with our hosts and the other guests around the table. Our hosts were welcoming and bilingual, and since we both wanted practice, we each spoke in our second language. This was a lovely one-night B&B stop on the south shore of the St. Lawrence, about an hour east of la ville de Quebec, while we were traveling from the Maritimes. I’d recommend both the B&B and museum.

The evening campfire was so relaxing, and the river kept us entertained with birds and other wildlife. Sylvie & Rene r welcoming, and the rooms r spotless. The L’Islet pier is an easy short walk, with amazing sand sculptures and live music on Thursday evening while you watch the sunset. Breakfast was delicious, with local cheese, fruit, crepes, homemade preserves and bread, all beautifully arranged with fresh flowers. A charming inn right on the St Lawrence, and everything was delightful.

On the second morning, we had planned an early bike departure, and Sylvie, Rene and Jeannette had left us a special breakfast in the fridge. We ate it looking out at the lovely garden and the Saint Lawrence. Rene even got up early to see us off and wish us “ Bon Journee” for the ride to Lévis. Secure bike storage was another real plus. We were cycling the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River and needed a rest day, with a storm forecast, so Maison de l’Anse aux Oies was a gem of a place to stay. Sylvie and Rene were friendly, interesting hosts and helped with all sorts of things that can be tricky on a long distance bike trip. Rene lent us tools to fix a damaged tent pole, and Sylvie suggested and helped us book an interesting Auberge in Lévis we would otherwise have missed. At Sylvie’s urging we visited the nearby maritime museum, and another couple staying at La Maison gave us a ride to the international accordion festival in Montmagny. Sylvie also gave us a useful schedule and information about getting a taxi back. The rooms and shared spaces were comfortable and immaculate. Breakfast was a gourmet meal, with all the guests chatting together at the table. Thank you to Sylvie, Rene and Sylvie’s sister Jeanette!

Our stay was even better than we’d expected. The gourmet breakfast featuring local food was incredible, and Sylvie and Rene were attentive hosts who noticed all the little details. The place is charming inside and out, right by the water. We highly recommend it.
