Big parking spaces, good showers, and a room with both indoor and outdoor access made it easy with our dog. The rooms were spacious and clean, and for once there were enough towels for everyone. It was the last hotel stop on our alcan trip and the nicest one. It is 20 minutes off the highway, but after the trip we’d had, the comfortable stay was worth the detour. Pet friendly too. I’d stay again if I’m ever back in Mackenzie.

The rooms at the Royal Oak were spotless, from the beds and carpets to the bathrooms, and really comfortable and quiet. I’ve stayed at plenty of big name hotels lately, and they didn’t measure up on cleanliness. The staff were friendly as well. I flew into the Mackenzie airport recently and was pleasantly surprised by how nice this hotel was.

We’d still come back. It feels new, the place was very clean, and it was incredibly quiet. The modern look and nice bathrooms were great, too. A couple of things were annoying: the shampoo dispenser was empty, which I discovered halfway through a shower, and housekeeping made the beds but didn’t leave fresh towels or take care of anything else. The website says continental breakfast is available, so we expected to eat before heading to the ski hill at 8am. We only learned when we went down that there’s no continental breakfast on Saturdays.

The front desk staff were excellent to deal with, and I enjoyed my work stay. The rooms were clean and good, a bit small but that wasn’t a problem. I could hear people clomping around upstairs through the somewhat thin walls. Grocery stores are a little far away, though in a small town nothing is really that far.

We left feeling the hotel’s attitude toward guests was disgusting. We called to ask about senior rates and were told yes, but when we arrived to book, staff checked our IDs and said we had to be over 65. We’re only just over 60. We explained that we were performing at the Legion, and Laurence, the President, said we could put the booking under his name since he’s 75. The staff then said he would have to come in person with identification. The owner of all these Mackenzie hotels went to school with Laurence, and everyone in town knows him. They couldn’t have cared less when we left. Fortunately, we stayed at the Mayor of Mackenzies bed and breakfast instead, which was awesome. Hotels in this town seem to have no idea how to treat guests. It’s pitiful.
