Hillcrest Motel

The rooms were filthy. I pulled back the sheets and found crumbs and hair, while other people in my crew found rotten, moldy eggs in the fridge. There were empty pop bottles left in rooms too. I'd sleep in my vehicle before staying here.

For $85.00, I got a quiet room with an excellent bed, clean sheets, a fridge, microwave, air conditioning, TV, and internet. I paid cash and had no hassle. The owner came to the door at 11:30 pm and booked me into a single for half what the other motel across town charged. The place is old and needs some touchups, but that's what I expected for the price. I was passing through the Manning area late and just needed a night's sleep without spending a fortune. I'd stay again. If you want a newer room and a big lobby, you can pay double for that. People shouldn't complain because they wanted a $250.00 room while paying $85.00.

There was river access, if you can call it that, and I did have fun fishing there. Otherwise, the motel was dilapidated and dirty, though tolerable at first. Then the manager, who couldn't really speak English, tried to charge us an extra 1600 dollars for our two rooms. The room smelled like puke mixed with Fabreze air freshener, had holes in the walls, and there were popsicles in the freezer that must have been sitting there for months. The fire alarm had been ripped off the wall and went off at 3 in the morning because of a low battery. Lying on the bed felt like being a street magician on a bed of nails. Terrible hotel, avoid it if you can.

The room was basic, but still better than sleeping in a vehicle. We'd been turned away by a hotel that had said we had a booking, then didn't know anything about our reservation when we got there. At Hillcrest, the owner kindly got up and gave us a room very late at night. I also forgot my pillow, and when I passed through Manning, Alberta again, they had kept it for me for about a month. Super nice manager.
