After a long day on the Bruce Trail, the very hot shower was much appreciated and great for tired muscles. The fridge, coffee maker and microwave were nice extras too. The place was about what you’d expect from a roadside motel. My main issue was the $100 damage deposit. I’ve traveled across Canada many times and haven’t had to pay an upfront deposit that required me to be there in person to get it back. Usually it’s just a card hold released around checkout. No one explained the process, and I only learned from another hiker that the room needed to be inspected before handing in the key. At 7 a.m., when people are trying to get on the trail, waiting for an inspection and having the card run again to get $100 back is a hassle. Because of that, I cancelled my reservation for the following weekend.

Even with the cold weather we’ve had lately, the rooms felt warm, and the place was really quiet. I was very impressed and will definitely come back.

We stayed one night for a wedding, and the room was as expected. The door wouldn’t lock when we were leaving for the wedding. I told the front desk, and a staff member came to try it but couldn’t get it locked. He assured me he would lock it for me, but when we came back, it was still unlocked. I raised it again at checkout and was brushed off with, “We have security”. A camera, which is probably what that meant, doesn’t give me peace of mind. The staff made me feel unheard and unvalued. I’d have given a better rating if the door lock, which matters a lot to me, had worked.

The motel was easy to find, and the receptionist was friendly. I arrived late, had to work early the next morning, and didn’t feel I had much choice but to stay the night. I had even considered sleeping in my car. Although the room looked tidy, I wasn’t confident about its cleanliness. The bedding looked dingy, the towels were grey and beige instead of white, and the caulking around the sink was moldy green. There was also a musty or food-like smell that I think came through the vent. At night, the air conditioning blew at full blast and the thermostat did nothing. Covering the floor vent with the shoe mat still left me cold and made it hard to sleep. They should use a laundry service to make sure each guest gets fresh linens, deep clean the rooms, re-grout the sinks and tubs, and replace small things like stained shower curtains. I know the prices are VERY low, but if they want to charge closer to the going rate and have people stay longer than one night or return, improvements are needed.

The room felt itchy, and the first bed I planned to use had a spot that looked like blood or what bed bugs leave behind. The tub had a pubic hair, the shower walls were covered in soap scum, towels ranged from white to beige, the mugs by the coffee maker weren’t clean, and the TV didn’t work. My coworkers and I were booked here by my work. The woman at the desk was nice, but repeated two or three times that I couldn’t smoke in the room after I’d already said I understood. She also told me that because I was alone in a two bed room, I could only use one, lol. Wild. There was no AC unit or way for me to control the room temperature. I called the front desk since it was closed for the night. The man said he’d check, and shortly after I got back to the room, cold air started coming from the floor vents with a strong Indian food smell. It stayed on all night, and my coworkers and I couldn’t sleep because it was so cold. Central air in a motel was definitely a first for me. And my deadbolt didn’t work. I was in room #5.
