Hotel Abri du Voyageur

The location is definitely fantastic, which makes the rest all the more disappointing. The hotel is old but livable, yet maintenance is poor and cleaning seems nonexistent. The bathroom, floor, and bed were in terrible condition, and I had to buy sheets to sleep on and cleaning products for the bathroom. With cleanliness like that, I don’t think the place should be open to the public. The breakfast was also very limited, with too few dishes for the guests. We had booked and paid online, and when we arrived we couldn’t cancel because it was non-refundable. That’s how places like this keep guests, including me. The disappointment was plain on people’s faces. Never again.

The location was great, and breakfast was okay, but I wouldn’t return. We ended up switching to a much better and cleaner hotel. Check-in took an hour and a half even though we were second in line, because the woman at the front desk was unbelievably slow. The listing showed a large room with two queen beds. What we got was two different rooms. One was dirty, with uneven floors and a poor-quality bathroom. The other had a view and the nicer bathroom, but only one bed and was extremely cold, even for Canada. You might end up in a room that feels like a hostel, so stay at your own risk.

The breakfast was a letdown. It was cereal and toast with peanut butter, Nutella, or jam, plus orange juice and coffee with cream, milk, and sugar. We’d hoped for something like eggs and beans. Still, we had a good stay overall and would recommend it to anyone after an inexpensive place near downtown. We booked the budget room, so there was no private bathroom. That was mostly fine, apart from one time when the previous person hadn’t tidied up. We had a street view and were close to lots of shops, including Chinatown and more.

For a one-night stop just to sleep, it was a good place. My private room was clean enough and had a queen bed. The entrance has a doorbell, which made it feel safer, though sounds from the hallway and windows carry easily. The staff mainly speak French, but the man I dealt with was friendly to me as a woman travelling alone. No breakfast.
