Best Western Plus Chemainus Inn

We had to stay here because of unforeseen circumstances, and the staff made the experience easy and enjoyable. They were really helpful, great with the kids, and breakfast was delicious. I’d love to come back, just not for such a long stretch. Thanks for making our stay so pleasant.

Everyone on staff was friendly, and our room was very clean and well kept. There were plenty of bathroom amenities, which was a nice surprise. The mattress could probably use replacing soon, but we’ll absolutely stay here again.

Breakfast was the best we had at any of the island hotels on our trip. The rooms were clean and spacious, and the stay felt like good value. Jeevan did a great job checking us in, and Kayla was wonderful with our questions. All the staff went above and beyond with their service. We had an amazing stay and highly recommend this property.

For a hockey tournament, the location is great. The room was clean, but the mattress dipped in the middle, the pillows were hard and thick, and the default temperature was too low to dry hockey gear. Other team members told us to turn the heat up high on the second day. Breakfast was standard, though there was no hot oatmeal. There are some nice front desk staff, but two were disrespectful. My check-in staff member was mean and made unprofessional comments. The next day, I checked with another staff member, who said the comments had been unnecessary and uncalled for. As a visible minority, I felt I was openly discriminated against. I’d suggest recording check-ins and staff interactions to protect yourself. I reported the incident to Rob, the manager, by phone on the 20th. He initially brushed it off, saying there would be no evidence, though I asked him to review the video recording and gave him the staff details, my room number, and the dates of my stay. He said he’d call on February 23. I waited longer, but heard nothing. A few days later, I called and spoke with the assistant front desk manager, who had worked on the day I checked in and seemed unaware of my complaint. I called Rob again the next day. He said he hadn’t called because he’d written down my phone number wrong, even though he had the information from my first call and could have looked up my guest details. He then said it was my word against the staff member’s, that there was no proof, and that nothing could be done. When I asked for a refund, he said he needed board approval. A voicemail later said the board members wouldn’t do anything. Rob also said the two staff who handled check-ins were the only minorities at the front desk. What was that supposed to mean? DARVO seemed to be his approach. He even claimed the Inn wasn’t part of the Best Western chain. It is. The reply from staff asks whether I’d contact the front desk for help after they’d been mean to me. That’s considerate. Great management and understanding. Would someone so good at DARVO admit it? Rob was right about one thing: there is packaged oatmeal at breakfast. To me, that isn’t the same as properly prepared hot oatmeal. I also wonder whether a rotating mattress counts as not being sunken. And please spell my name correctly here. Competence isn’t the main complaint, but the name mistake fits with the wrong phone number. Was looking up my number through the guest booking really beyond their ability? The manager’s handling of this makes me question how someone incompetent becomes a general manager. Also, this hotel isn’t listed on Better Business Bureau. If you have to stay here, record your experience.
