Saintlo Ottawa Jail Hostel

The location made getting around easy. Byward Market and Parliament are an easy walk, and Rideau Centre is right across the road. The included breakfast was really hearty, with eggs, potatoes, bagels, fruit, coffee, and tea. The kitchen looked well equipped for cooking, though I only used it for fridge space. I stayed over Easter weekend and was really impressed. The facilities were clean and well cared for, and the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. They’d posted good suggestions for nearby activities and places to eat in the lobby. The free jail tour was a nice bonus. I knew the individual single rooms, or cells, weren’t fully enclosed, but still had no trouble sleeping. Light sleepers might want a sleep mask or earplugs. Parking is very limited, and the mall garage across the road is expensive. I’d absolutely stay again.

I really appreciated the staff here. Chris was polite and welcoming when I had a long chat with him after midnight, and another staff member went out of their way to find me a USB cable. The whole team seemed to enjoy being there, and check-in and checkout were quick and easy. Saintlo Jail Hostel was a unique stay, very clean and in an unbeatable location. I’d happily recommend it and would stay again.

The rooms can feel a little claustrophobic since it used to be a real jail, but they’re cozy. Just remember it’s a hostel in an old jail and don’t arrive expecting too much. The common areas are kept clean, and the free breakfast is excellent. Go early if you want potatoes and eggs, they run out fast. It’s a good cheap option right in the heart of ottawa. Parking on site is $20, first come, first served when you arrive.

Staying in a former prison was a great experience, and it suits solo travellers or groups of friends. Breakfast is included. You can park there for an extra $20, which seems fair. It’s a real jail, so don’t expect comfort or fancy things. The location is very convenient, with everything in walking distance, and the staff have lots of good suggestions for food and things to visit.
