I love hostels, and I love Red, so I feel compelled to leave an overly detailed review. This place could be great with a few changes, but right now it’s just… meh. Pretty mid. The best parts were the three-minute walk to the Red Mtn base area, clean spaces, great sound insulation between rooms and common areas, a good gear room, keycard access, and a great fridge and pantry bins. A lot needs attention. The laundry room was partly out of order: two of the three washers and one of the three dryers weren’t working. That would be a pain if the hostel were even a little busy. There’s no change machine on site, which was inconvenient when the bank in town was closed. My group managed to get change by asking at the Josie. The kitchen isn’t fully equipped, and it would be a real problem when the hostel is busy. There are only about five eating bowls, no large bowls for prep or salads, no spatulas except half of a broken one, and no rubber scrapers. There’s only one large cutting board, and some pots and pans need replacing because their nonstick coatings are peeling or their bottoms wobble. The entry lounge with the green and yellow couches isn’t comfortable, so everyone seems to sit at the kitchen benches instead. The advertised meeting room is being used as a staff lounge. Our bedroom window was broken and taped shut, and the room got very hot at night, especially on the top bunks. We asked about changing rooms and got no response. To make the place a five out of five, I’d open a meeting room for guests and redo the lounge with comfortable couches, chairs, and tables for games or puzzles, maybe a dartboard so people have somewhere to hang out and chat. The kitchen needs better pots and pans, more eating and mixing bowls, spatulas, and rubber scrapers. The washers and dryers need fixing, and a cash or card change machine would be useful. I think people would pay a reasonable fee for coins. The eight-person bunk room also needs more hooks for towels and other things in the bathroom, entry, and sink areas. There’s room for them, and adding some would make a big difference.

A room had no door handle and I got locked inside, as the pictures show. The laundry is completely broken too, the door fell off the only machine that works. It didn’t feel like a typical hostel where staff live in the building. Terrible experience overall, I don’t recommend it.

We had a great late-season trip here with two families. It was an easy walk to the lifts and easy to come back for lunch. The kitchen worked well for cooking, and the staff were friendly. The gear room was just right, though a few coat hooks might help. The sleeping areas were clean and cozy. The beds could use tightening because movement on a top bunk was loud throughout the room, but soundproofing between rooms was excellent. A freezer and a proper dishwasher would be nice additions.

We had a great stay, with plenty of common space and always somewhere to get away, even over a holiday weekend. I left my car parked on Sunday and didn’t go back to it for a week. There’s limited parking at the front, but plenty at the back of the hostel, even on family day weekend (President’s Day in the US). It’s a short walk to the slopes. The rooms are small for four, though it worked out great with just two of us most of the time. The bedding was quite comfortable once settled in. The kitchen was great after we figured out the range top and dishwasher, with lots of fridge space and cubbies for food. I’d recommend cooking on the stovetop or in the microwave. There is a toaster oven, but no full-size oven. The gear room was great too, with ski racks, shoe cubbies, and a locker for your helmet and other gear. Bring your own lock. All in all, a great experience.

The rooms were great and the location excellent. There’s no soap bottle at the sink for some reason, and the kitchen is a bit lacking, with no oven. No oven in a hostel! It’s new and nice, in a great spot, and a great deal, but they should work on a few things. Service felt a little odd because there didn’t seem to be staff around during the day. We checked in with a code, and the checkout instructions were unclear, so I wasn’t sure where to leave the keys. If they fixed those things and added a sauna, I’d be there every weekend.
