The Sunset Hotel West End

I was looking forward to seeing the newly branded and renovated Sunset Inn after staying there many times before. The location is great, and the semi-secure parking is a plus. The room was fine, though finding a rusty bathtub surprised me. I also wish they'd had rolling luggage carts. The coded entry worked for the first 24 hours, then my building code stopped working on the second night. There's a separate code for the room. At 10 p.m. on a long weekend, with nobody at the front desk, I tried the lobby and parking entrances several times. The night shift person who answered my call wasn't on site and took 45 minutes to get back to me with a new code. I sat in my car while I waited. Far from ideal. I doubt I'll return.

The location was convenient for shops and bars, and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The room, though, was too warm, with air-conditioning that didn't work properly and only reached the bedroom. It also had thin walls, so I could hear neighbors talking at a normal volume. The shower curtain in the bathroom was loose and wouldn't stay in place. The rooms weren't very clean, and the furniture looked well used. Fabric was coming loose on the chair, and the couch smelled funky. For the room rate, it wasn't worth it, and honestly I don't think I'd stay again. Very unfortunate.

We had a one-bedroom apartment and loved our stay. The kitchen was very well equipped, and luggage storage was easy and a lifesaver on checkout day. The shower pressure was terrible, but we could put up with that since everything else was great. The area felt safe compared with some other parts of Vancouver we'd been in.

We stayed for our first three nights on a Canadian road trip. The apartment was huge and had everything we needed, with places to eat and drink just a few minutes away on foot. That was especially handy after our late flight when we only wanted to grab something quick. Getting in and out of the parking area was tight. It’s down a back road behind the building, and luckily it wasn’t full during our stay, which gave us more room to maneuver. I can imagine it would be tricky when every spot is taken.
