Gasthaus zum Sternen

We’d definitely stay again. It’s a lovely old-fashioned guesthouse with a great location and a very fair price. The beds were comfortable, the room had nice views and the bathroom was perfect. We arrived late for breakfast, but they still welcomed us in to eat, which was awesome.

We had lunch there and the service was very friendly. The menu is quite limited, which I usually take as a good sign. We ordered soup and salad, but the potatoes in the soup weren’t very good, so I’m giving it four stars. The bread wasn’t fresh either, and came precut in a plastic bag.

Our hotel arranged a dinner reservation for four several months ahead, but when we showed up a few minutes early, the host insisted it was for the night before and said we’d been no-shows. He blamed our hotel for booking the wrong date. We showed him the hotel’s email with our dinner plans for the week, but he still said the hotel had made the mistake. He offered neither another arrangement nor a table the following night. We contacted the concierge right away, and they found an email confirmation from the restaurant itself showing our date was correct and the restaurant had made the error. By then, it was too late to return. This was the only bad experience we had during a week in Andermatt. The host had clearly given our table away and needed a story, in my view. I’d avoid the restaurant because of the customer service. If you decide to eat there, have a backup plan in case the host lies to you too. I’m happy to provide the email confirmation if asked.

We didn’t stay here, though we’d be interested in the rooms if we come back to Andermatt. Local people and other travelers recommended the restaurant a couple of times on our first evening. The location is excellent, central and an easy walk from the train station and both gondolas. The restaurant seating area, kitchen and bathroom facilities looked well kept and clean, so I’d expect the rooms to be similar.
