The location was a real plus: we could walk from the station and get to the center easily by public transport. Breakfast was adequate, too. But the room was a big disappointment for a supposed four-star hotel. It was too small for two people and our two suitcases, the floors squeaked, and the place felt shabby, old, and worn out. We arrived half an hour before check-in and had to wait because the room wasn’t ready. The room phone didn’t work, and several times we had to go to reception to ask for toilet paper, tissues, and body soap. There was a coffee maker, but we had to ask room service twice to replenish the coffee and sugar. These may sound like little things, but I wouldn’t expect them at a four-star hotel. My partner and I spent eight days here over the December 2025 Christmas holidays. I won’t stay at Hotel Euler again or recommend it. It’s anything but grand.

The free travel card was a great extra, and they let us check out at noon and store our bags. There’s a bar and restaurant that looked lovely, though we didn’t try them. We ate at Mum's Kitchen, an 11-minute walk away. The food was fabulous, the portions huge, and the fried rice could easily feed two. Two mains and two cokes cost 60chf, which was good value. The hotel is right by the station and tram stops, with a Burger King and McDonalds two minutes away and a Migros store inside the station. Even with earplugs, I could hear every train and tram from 4:45 am. There are a lot of them. The room had a coffee machine but no tea-making setup. Reception lent us a kettle, but there was no tea, sugar, or milk. The cups were espresso size, enough for just one drink. We had one feather pillow each and doubled them up. I suppose we could have asked for more, but I was too exhausted.

The front desk team were lovely, and the room was clean and comfortable. The desk had some wear from previous guests, though. We liked the hotel’s older style. When you’re visiting Basel, who wants an ultra-modern glass cube?

The staff were very helpful, and the buffet breakfast was good quality with a nice range of choices. The location worked well, close to Bahnhof Basel SBB, public transport, cafes and food, and within walking distance of Basel’s historic center. I was grateful to get into my room early, at 10 am on 20 Dec 2025. Staff also helped turn up the heating, which was an old hydronic system behind the curtains. The worn dial knob fell off. They can store your luggage for a few hours and give you a token. The vintage decor has charm, and the room was quiet enough, but my economy single felt dated and worn, and really needs an upgrade. The bed was floppy, the toilet and shower were cramped, and there are steps to the entrance. A locked connecting door to the next room made me uneasy. The old manual safe was high on a shelf. Amenities were basic, though the tea and coffee pod selection was good. You have to use the coffee pod machine to heat water for tea. It’s fine for a short stay, but check online for room options and facilities when booking. Definitely not four-star.

We were married 40 years ago just a 12-minute walk from here, so staying at Basel’s oldest hotel felt special. It’s still in a very convenient spot. The downsides were no wheelchair access, hardly any electrical outlets guests could use in the room, and a disastrous dinner at the hotel restaurant.
