Hotel Metropol Basel

The service was professional and friendly everywhere, from reception to room service and the dining area. The location was good too, close to the train station and a handy tram interchange. Noise was my only real gripe. We were on the 5th floor, and sounds from the adjoining room came through whenever they shut both the front and bathroom doors. We could also hear their windows closing. It all happened after 11pm on the nights we were there.

My room was great, with a lovely view and a comfy bed. I arrived early but was able to check in at 11 am, so I could head out and explore the city. The staff also explained the basel card to me. No complaints at all.

Good value for pricey Basel, and the hotel was okay, but the service was very disappointing. We’d confirmed beforehand that we could store our bikes because the place is advertised as a “bike hotel.” When we arrived, though, the only option offered was a cramped left luggage room, up a full flight of stairs with our heavy e-bikes and no help. At checkout the next morning there was no staff around, so we had to ask the hotel next door for help. That’s when we found out there was a proper garage for the bikes! Argh. The room was absurdly hot, too.

The room was spacious and very clean, but looked seriously dated and old-fashioned. Mine faced a busy road, though the double window did a good job blocking the noise. Breakfast was okay, and the service was very friendly. It’s right by the station and only a short walk into town, which is handy. I couldn’t find any air conditioning controls, so I’m not sure the room had air conditioning at all.
