Hotel Beatus

Hotel Beatus is a quiet little bed and breakfast tucked away near Interlaken, a real hidden gem if you're after somewhere peaceful and quaint. The property is more than 120 years old, with spectacular views, free parking and Wi-Fi, and breakfast for hotel guests. The lovely hosts Keith and Anita gave superb service. Our room and bathroom were clean, and we had a quiet night's sleep. There was radiator heating if we needed it. I'm pretty spoiled by hot showers at home, so the warm-to-cool shower was a first for me. 😅 We had a splendid two nights and will book again.

The stay was stressful and unwelcoming, and fell far below what I expect from a hotel listed on Booking.com. From the moment we arrived, the receptionist/owner was hostile toward us. My wife wears a hijab, and the way she looked at us and spoke to us, along with suggesting we go elsewhere, felt clearly discriminatory. That felt like exclusion, not hospitality. We had accidentally left our 19-month-old baby off the booking. Rather than show understanding, the hotel asked for an extra 200 CHF for the infant, which seemed unreasonable and exploitative. There was no microwave or other way to warm baby food, and the restaurant was closed when we arrived. We also found insects in the bathroom. Breakfast was unacceptable too: just one egg for two adults, with no proper alternatives.

My mother and I had the best three days there. The rooms were clean, breakfast was nice, and the view was awesome. The lady and man were lovely and spoke English, French, and German. It's a dream hotel in a very good location, and the price was good too.

I've stayed in hundreds of hotels in Europe, and nobody has ever told me to go away like this owner did. I didn't realize the hotel had two entrances; the first one we found was blocked by a huge flower pot. When I pushed the door, the pot nearly hit me. The owner rushed out shouting, "go away". He also tried to attack me over my nationality, and I found him completely racist. Because of the owner, I almost couldn't check in. When I knocked over the flower pot, he said I didn't have to pay a penalty. But at checkout he demanded a 30 CHF fine. I gave him €50 and didn't want to say another word. I was really disappointed; this place is rubbish.
