Rustico by Al Giardinetto

The people were nice, but even for a quick stopover I wouldn't recommend it. We had a family room for four, and the two bunk beds felt very unstable. The bathroom was shared with two other rooms, which hadn't been clear to me when I booked. Thin curtains let in so much light from outside that the room stayed bright at night. I know Switzerland is expensive, but this was far too much for what we got.

The standout things at Al Giardinetto were the cleanliness and friendly staff. Six of us stayed one night on our way from the north to Italy, after a fantastic meal at the associated restaurant. We paid ahead for breakfast and had a lovely continental spread. The rooms were a decent size, though the bathrooms weren't necessarily attached. The shared facilities were immaculate, with a really high-flow shower. We slept okay. With the double glazing shut, outside noise stayed out; with it open, you'd hear it. It's exactly what it says it is, a convenient, affordable stop, and possibly the cleanest place you'll ever stay. The facilities aren't five-star hotel level, but for service, cleanliness, and value for money it's hard to fault.

We had a nice stay overall, and the hotel was clean. It sits right in the center and has a good restaurant with good food, funny staff, and pretty good prices for Switzerland. The nearby road brings motorbikes and muscle cars rumbling past, so it can get really loud at night. We found it almost impossible to sleep with the window open. Motor bikers seem to like the place, which adds to the noise.

I slept well, and checkout was quick and pleasant. Breakfast was good too, just bread, butter, jelly, and some eggs, all I needed. The shower and other sanitary facilities were clean, and I loved having so many towels to myself. The mattress had seen better days, but I only needed a bed for the night, so I won't complain. I ended up at al Giardinetto after my first-choice hotel in Ascona was full during a spontaneous motorcycle tour through southern Switzerland and Italy. I was glad to find a cheap room. I knew the place from stopping there for pizza at noon on other tours, but hadn't tried staying overnight. I booked cheaply and honestly didn't expect much. They greeted me warmly and even had a spot for my bike. The pizza was delicious as always. The waiter impressed me with how he handled all the customers. He spoke Italian, German, and English, and probably French and more. I'll definitely look for a room there again when I'm in Ticino. Grazie mille =)
