Swiss Star Illnau

A great place for one night, with very spacious rooms for the price and a very good bed. The self-service check-in worked flawlessly. The only downside was the €15 parking fee for an open lot.

I never expected to write a negative review, but this was the worst hotel I’ve stayed in in Switzerland. Our room looked nothing like the photos on booking.com, and the woman in charge was incredibly rude, disrespectful, and racist. She had poor communication skills, didn’t speak English, and insulted us in German. She clearly didn’t know how to treat guests. In the morning, there was a sewage smell and nobody could explain why. We were on the ground floor, so there was noise as well. The towels looked used, and the sheets were light yellow rather than white, making them seem very worn. Half the hotel wasn’t booked that day, but nobody told us the checkout time. We assumed it was 11, as at other places, then found out it was 10. The same rude, unbearable woman came to our room shouting in German. Unless you’re on a tight budget and desperate for somewhere to stay one night, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. This "hotel" just isn’t it.

The room was so quiet, with big windows, and everything felt spotless in what seemed like a new or freshly renovated building. The staff were kind and professional, and took care of the little things, showing me around and making sure I had all the information I needed. When my Uber ride to the nearby train station was cancelled, the manager even walked me there.

For the price, the room was a very good deal compared with the nearby options. It was clean and comfortable, and the bathroom was nice. There’s only a small fridge in the room, and quite a bit of light comes in during the morning. The hotel is quite isolated, and parking costs 15CHF per day. The receptionist left the worst impression, since she didn’t speak English. Also, make sure you register first to get a key code, then print another code on site to enter the room. There’s no key.
