Berggasthaus First

Ruxi made our lunch especially memorable. She was so friendly, took time to chat, and recommended the Swiss cheese fondue, which was wow and far better than anything we found in town or nearby. The staff were all kind and readily available. Berggasthaus in Grindelwald has extraordinary food, and the house wine went perfectly with it. With the breathtaking mountain view and the quality of the meal, the price felt well worth it. Highly recommended for lunch in the Alps.

Room 8 was cozy and warm, with one double bed and two singles. The duvets were so comfortable that I wish I’d asked what brand they were. We heard only occasional service or maintenance noise nearby, and it was quiet well before 11 PM. The facilities, for both guests and the public, were clean and well kept. There’s a large picnic area where you can eat your own food, including spots by a heater, plus a room for ski gear and luggage and a few lockers for valuables that cost 2 CHF. The breakfast buffet made for a relaxed start, with plenty to choose from, and the Sirocco tea was fantastic. Dinner was much better than we expected, especially the salad, which I loved. Everyone on the team was cheerful, kind, and helpful. I also liked seeing how gently they interacted with the local Alpine choughs, who were entertaining to watch. I hurt my knee skiing on Friday, so I could only ski briefly and our Saturday plans changed. Still, it was pleasant to spend time on the grounds and terrace while my partner went skiing. Being up there after the slopes closed, and waking before everyone arrived, felt special. We were happy with our weekend stay and recommend giving it a try.

Beautiful snowy day. The restaurant was packed, but we still found a table. The food was tasty, came quickly, and the service was great. Very nice people. Go enjoy it 😉

After the famous “first walk,” this restaurant is right there, with an unreal view of the Swiss Alps and peaks in every direction. I had the beef stew, which was fresh and tender, just right after walking in the mountain air. They serve beer too. Sitting outside with a drink and that scenery was unforgettable. I only wish I’d known there was a hotel up there before visiting, because staying overnight with those views sounds like a dream. If you’re heading up, plan to eat here and maybe look into staying longer.
