Berghaus Bäregg

People at the top are friendly as long as you treat them with respect. The food isn’t top restaurant quality, but this is a mountain refuge, and the prices aren’t that high when you consider the supplies arrive by helicopter and you’re in Switzerland. From Pfingstegg, the hike takes about 1:20, with a very steep stretch near the end. I wouldn’t call it family friendly, and it’s best to set off fairly early. Starting at the bottom in Grindelwald would take around 3:30 to reach Berghaus Baregg. Going down takes about an hour to the Pfingstegg cable car or two hours all the way to Grindelwald.

The shared sleeping setup and decent food were good, and the hut’s location and views are lovely. The climb is steep, but it’s worth it.

The setting is amazing, and the short, easy hike makes it a good option for families. The food was just okay. We ordered rösti, and it was the worst I’ve tried in Swiss huts, though still passable. I’d bring food and eat near the hut instead. They seem very focused on getting as much money as possible from customers. When we asked for another fork, the lady warned us it would cost extra. That felt like a joke, especially since the fork had a huge hair on it and we didn’t use it.

A gorgeous spot, and a very nice hut for an overnight stay. The terrace and bedrooms were comfortable and thoughtfully laid out. The food and drinks were delicious too.
