Central Hotel Wolter

We’ve visited Grindelwald ten times for winter and summer holidays and tried several hotels. Central Wolter is our favourite, and in our opinion it’s the best all-round choice and best value in town. The staff are friendly and really helpful, breakfast is great, and the location is excellent, very close to the train and bus stations. When we checked out, we booked again for next year.

We were charged only for the pasta and steak after the problems with our dinner, but the meal was still a frustrating experience. We ordered salad, pasta, fish, and steak. The male waiters brought all four dishes at once, seemed confused, left, then came back. Most of the food was cold, except the pasta, and the salad served with the fish was just a duplicate of the salad we had already ordered. I asked to speak with a manager. An older woman eventually came, then a young manager approached us and was rude and dismissive. She said that “tour groups want all their food at once” and that we hadn’t asked for the dishes to be served in sequence. We were just two individuals, not a tour group, and it felt like she was blaming us instead of acknowledging the service failure. We went to the Central Hotel Wolter restaurant for dinner, expecting the salad first, then pasta, then the main courses, which is standard practice. The service was poor, and the way our complaint was handled was unacceptable. I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant.

The location made getting around so easy. We arrived by train and the hotel was less than a minute away, about a 30-second walk. The buses for the ski areas and nearby little towns stop opposite, there’s a ski hire shop a couple of doors down, and a supermarket about two minutes away on foot. The hotel also has a lovely restaurant downstairs, and we enjoyed breakfast each morning. Everyone on staff we met was very nice, friendly, and helpful. The hotel and bedrooms were cosy and clean, and the place feels welcoming and homely. We feel so at home there, and have really enjoyed every stay. We’d highly recommend it!

Breakfast was included, and it was good with plenty of variety. The room was small but comfortable, with great water pressure and a nice hot shower. The location is handy too, 100m from the train station and across the street from the bus stop.
