Hotel Escher

I was touring by bicycle and stayed here in October 2016. The room was simple but comfortable, with views over the town and mountains, and the shower was great. Breakfast was lovely, service very friendly, and the value seriously good. They also had a safe place for my bike.

Check-in took an hour, which was no fun with a five-year-old. Breakfast was okay but not plentiful. The listing also got the room wrong: the double room described as having a SPA BATH actually had an ordinary bath. The owners aren't Swiss, though I'm sure they know the difference. I wouldn't recommend it for a trouble-free break.

The view was nice, and the owner picked me up at the station. The price was low, so the cheap room materials weren't a surprise. Breakfast was good, and the middle-aged man who was there during the day seemed pleasant. Other people have called this family-run place friendly, but that wasn't my experience. I visited in shoulder season. The family left after giving me the key, and when I called for a blanket, I was told where to find one, somewhat curtly. At 10 at night I realized there were no towels, but chose not to call and skipped my shower. I broke a plastic piece on the electrical plug cover by accident and offered to pay, but the man didn't add it to the bill. I left a day early after paying for all three nights and, while rushing for the bus, didn't get to leave the extra 5 or 10 CHF I'd promised him. Later I called about business papers I'd left behind. His wife reproached me, said she wouldn't mail anything until I prepaid postage, and tried to make me feel guilty about the broken plastic. I offered again to pay, but she seemed unsure what a replacement cover might cost. That unpleasant exchange was the last I heard from them. I reprinted the papers and rebuilt the missing information, and I also mailed 10 CHF. Some people may find it a good-value place with a nice breakfast. This was my experience, and I won't return.
