The views and the charming exterior raised our hopes, but this was easily the most disappointing hotel stay I can remember in 30 years of traveling, as a student and later as an adult. We paid CHF 290 per night and found a cold building in October, damp and water damage in the children's room, poor lighting, and no staff around for most of our stay. The plug-in heaters we found in a hallway helped, but that shouldn't have been necessary. The place felt like a dingy ghost hotel charging regular rates. Getting there late was stressful. I called several numbers repeatedly before a man finally answered. He spoke no French and only broken English, but I managed to say we'd be late and was assured someone would greet us. Instead, there was nobody there, just a note and two keys. It took us a while to work out which rooms were ours, and the bad lighting made it hard to see much. The next morning, no one was available for breakfast either, although my confirmation email said it was included. The lobby felt like a Chinese tea house with a strange collection of trinkets and tea, and there was a breakfast setup and coffee machine but no attendant. When I reached someone, they said breakfast wasn't included and suggested we pay at the hotel across the way. Hotel Echer was great, but that didn't match what I had in writing. We saw no one from the hotel again until Sunday morning at checkout, when the owners sent their daughter to collect payment. We eventually got a small discount, which partly covered the nice breakfast across the way. It was a token gesture, and far too little, far too late.
