Hotel Colibrv

The staff were really friendly and helpful, and breakfast was decent, just what you'd expect from a three-star hotel. We stayed two nights as a family of three in a bright, spacious room with a balcony and a spectacular panorama of Lugano lake and Lugano city. The room and bathroom were very clean, though the furnishings were a bit dated. They still worked and were reasonably comfortable. We had a pleasant stay, and the views were memorable.

The view is simply wonderful, and the staff were polite and nice. The hotel feels straight out of the 70s, like hardly anything has been touched, but it's clean and well kept. We might come back.

Getting bags from the lower parking area means dealing with quite a few steps, so it's not very convenient if you have a lot to carry. You might be able to unload at the door using the lane behind and above the hotel. I liked the hotel's retro modern style. My room felt like a little suite that could've been in 70s Vegas, and both the room and dining area had great lake views. Breakfast was good, and the hotel was very dog friendly, which I really appreciated.

Great location, but almost everything else was awful. The staff don't speak English and made no effort to communicate. They were extremely rude and the service was terrible. During my month there, they never changed my sheets despite repeated requests, and I had to beg for clean towels. The bed was small and incredibly uncomfortable. The pillows were so old I bought new ones just to sleep a bit better. The front rooms have a great view, but the others are tiny, cramped, and have unusually small beds. I asked to change rooms three times because either the room or the bed was too small. The hotel hasn't been renovated since the 1970s, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's when the mattresses and pillows date from. The staff seemed to average around 75 years old. The place felt like a strange old folks' home where people had been made to work well past retirement. The food was complete trash, too, and the air-conditioning in the rooms didn't work.
