The building is older, so the room had a few little quirks, but I’d still go back in a heartbeat. I felt welcomed and at home. The team were unbelievably nice, and the service was incredible. The views are breathtaking, and remember to book a dinner reservation!

The laundry charge was 106 CHF, about $200 AUD, for less than a quarter of a load, mostly socks and underwear. I was told the price would be confirmed after staff assessed the materials, and I specifically asked them to do that before washing anything. I’d asked about laundry at check-in, filled in the items list, and checked the price several times. The black and white striped top came back grey, too. I also got international transaction fees because I hadn’t expected a charge of that size in CHF after the hotel said I owed nothing. At checkout, I asked about the city tax and bar tab, but the clerk confirmed there was no outstanding bill. A couple of hours later the hotel charged me 170 francs. I hadn’t authorized that transaction or signed anything allowing them to debit the amount. I emailed about it, but they offered no solution and basically said bad luck. They won’t take responsibility for the staff member telling us nothing was owed. It feels like they care more about chasing money than providing service. I didn’t want to make a fuss at the time, but after seeing the charge, I think it’s warranted. Charging $200 AUD for less than a load of laundry is ridiculous. They certainly didn’t wash it in gold, because I’m broke now. I don’t recommend staying here if you don’t want to feel ripped off.

The reception service was good, and breakfast was thoughtfully put together and delicious. From our room, the view was amazing. We did have to find out for ourselves that the garden entrance at the back lets you come and go directly to the riviera. Nobody mentioned it, so we walked around the old hotel and figured it out. It’s a vintage-style place with lovely architecture and a beautiful riviera view, and I’d recommend it.

No air conditioning meant our room got very warm in summer, though the fans helped. There’s no pool either, but you can swim in the lake. The hotel is right by the water and less than five minutes from the center of Montreux. We had a really enjoyable stay, and dinner was excellent. The bedroom view of lake Geneva is breathtaking, so I think it’s worth paying extra for. The room was spacious, with a very nice rain shower. Breakfast was excellent, with smoked salmon, cheeses, hot sausages, bacon, potatoes, mixed vegetables, fruit like watermelon, pineapple and melon, plus yogurt. There’s lots of street parking, though for weekday parking all day you need to buy a CHF10 card from the hotel.
