Griesalp Hotels

For anyone walking the Via Alpina, this is an extremely convenient stop with everything you need. The hotel is tucked up a steep, remote valley, and the bus ride there is unforgettable in its own right. The rooms are small and pretty bare bones, though the beds were comfortable. Half-board meals were good, and they can pack a lunch for the next day’s hike for a fee. Check-in and checkout were a little confusing because the staff were busy running the kitchen and weren’t at reception. The location is worth keeping in mind when judging the hotel.

Theresa, the woman in charge, or “the boss,” made our stay. She was understanding and wonderfully hospitable, helped us with everything, pointed out the best nearby spots, and showed us how to get back to the city. The view is magical too, honestly something else. Everyone who goes there seems to sum it up with one word: “heaven.” It’s just amazing.

Friendly people and a lovely place to spend a holiday.

The location is fantastic, right in the Alps. You can walk from Reichenbach, or take the adventurous Postauto on Switzerland’s steepest Postauto line. It’s crazy cool. The hotel Griessalp is on the expensive side for its rooms and service, though it has a lovely little wellness retreat just for guests. Hot tubs cost extra. The food was OK, but there weren’t many vegetarian options. Service was friendly, if a bit chaotic, with very few people running the whole place and everyone doing a bit of everything. The top rooms under the roof may be more expensive, but the ceiling is very low, so watch your head. There’s no fridge or kettle for tea or coffee.
