Hotel Steinbock

The decor is nice, and the staff were helpful. The building has a tidy, all-wood look. At night it gets incredibly warm, maybe they could turn the heat down, and the pillows weren't comfortable. We also didn't get a room with a bathtub, unfortunately.

We only came for dinner, not an overnight stay. The restaurant looks attractive from outside and feels cozy inside, with a nice view. Staff were pleasant, service was fairly quick, and the portions were a decent size. The meal itself didn't suit us much. Maybe the regional dishes and flavors just aren't our thing. We shared the cheese, which was a generous portion, but it wasn't especially tasty and we've had better Swiss cheeses. The two dishes in the photos were much alike, both tasting like thick, rather bland pasta. One of our companions had ravioli with a strong flavor that wasn't unpleasant, but it was so intense he struggled to eat more than two pieces. Another had the cordon bleu and called it the driest he'd ever eaten. The bread also seemed underbaked and soggy in the middle, though perhaps that's regional and I'm just not very knowledgeable about food. The bill was 150 CHF for four mains, a starter, and several drinks. That's not outrageous, but I don't feel we spent the money well.

We first tried reaching the hotel by email and then by phone, but got no response. While in Vals, we walked over to book a meal. There was nobody at reception when we arrived, so we rang the bell three times and still no one came. The communication was disappointing.

The breakfast had tasty local treats, and dinner at the hotel restaurant was hearty, with local handmade specialties. It's a beautiful, family-friendly hotel with lovely views and friendly staff. The location is handy for the gondola and nearby hiking trails.
